About Us
It has taken Illinois State University's Students
for Sensible Drug Policy chapter many years to evolve into what it
is today. Back in the Fall semester of 2001 Woody Harrelson came to
speak to the ISU faculty and student body, talking about the uses of
industrial hemp. Students learned the importance of the
cannabis plant and the potential it has to save the world (Don't
believe us? Check it out
http://www.jackherer.com/chapter02.html ). ISU's
environmental organization, Students Environmental Action Coalition
(SEAC), was inspired along with a few other interested students
created an ISU registered student organization called Mobilizing
Activists and Students for Hemp (MASH). Originally, MASH
focused on industrial hemp and medical marijuana; however, since
then our organization has grown. The number of people involved
has risen and our effort and energy has expanded to encompass
everything that the war on drugs effects. In 2006 MASH decided
to connect to and be a part of the international organization
Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP). SSDP works to change
the unjust laws on drugs that are affecting our communities.
Although drugs themselves can be harmful substances, we believe that
our current unjust drug policies only make the war on drugs worse.
As U.S. citizens it is our responsibility to understand our laws and
fight for desired change. |
